Facts about Tamil Nadu

The State of Tamil Nadu is the lies in the southern most part of India. It is a land mostly known for its classical form of dance Bharata Natyam. In the year 2013, panel report of Raghuram Rajan marked Tamil Nadu as the 3rd most developed state in India based on a Multi Dimensional Development Index. Some important facts about Tamilnadu are mentioned below:

Existence: Tamilnadu state came into existence on 26th January 1950.

Boundary: It is surrounded by the Nilgiri, Eastern Ghats, the Anamalai Hills, Kerala, the Bay of Bengal, the Palk Strait, the Gulf of Mannar and the Indian Ocean.

Population: As per Census 2011, the total population of Tamil Nadu is 72,138,999. Tamil Nadu ranks 7th position in population wise.

Land Area: The total area of land of Tamil Nadu is 130,058 sq. km. Tamil Nadu ranks 11th position in area wise.

Language: Its Official as well as widely spoken language is Tamil.

Literacy: Its literacy ratio is 80.3%

City: Chennai, formerly known as Madras, is its Capital City. Also, Chennai is the largest city of the state.

District: There are 32 districts present in Tamil Nadu.

Climate: It mostly depends on monsoon rains. Hence, when monsoon fails, it results to drought.

Connectivity: Tamil Nadu has a good transport system that connects all over the Tamil Nadu via roadways, railways and airways. Chennai has the international airport but it has other airports in Salem, Tiruchirapally etc.

Places of Interests: The famous tourist’s places in Tamil Nadu are Madras, Mahabalipuram, Kanchipuram, Pondicherry, and Madurai etc.

Festivals: Widely celebrated festival in Tamil Nadu is Pongal or Tamizhar Thirunaal or Makar Sakranti. Other festivals also celebrated like Deapavali, Krishna Jayanthi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Good Friday etc.

Religion: Most of the people in the State of Tamil Nadu practice Hinduism with a majority of 88.3%. Remaining others include Christianity, Islam etc.
